Overview

By September 1944 the Allies had broken out of Normandy and were advancing across Europe. Operation Market Garden was one of the boldest plans of the war, over 30,000 Allied troops were to be dropped behind enemy lines, into occupied Holland. Their mission was clear, to capture the bridges that spanned the rivers on the Dutch/German border, providing a corridor that would allow the Allied Army to advance rapidly into Germany.

What were the plans that made up Operation Market Garden and what did it mean for the men who fought here? Unfortunately, this daring plan did not have the expected outcome; the Allies suffered heavy casualties and after nine days of fighting there was no alternative but to withdraw. Operation Market Garden had ended, but the war and battle to liberate Holland would continue.

Itinerary

Below is a sample itinerary for a 4 day tour, all tours are personalised and once your tour is booked your expert guide will get in touch to start working with you to produce an itinerary for your bespoke tour.
Day 1:
After meeting your guide at Schiphol Airport, we will head to the Airborne Museum in Hartenstein to set the scene for our tour. The museum is set in the Villa Hartenstein, which during the war was used as the Headquarters for the British Airborne Troops and gives a day-by-day account of the Battle of Arnhem. Departing from here later this afternoon we will head to your hotel in Arnhem, where you will enjoy a three-night stay.
Day 2:
This morning following breakfast, we head out to Joe’s Bridge and look at the attack by the Guards Division, followed by a visit to the Valkenswaard CWGC Cemetery, where some of those killed in the breakout lie. We will also visit the German Cemetery at Ysselsteyn before heading to Grave Bridge to hear about its importance and capture by the 82nd Airborne Division. Travelling to Nijmegen we learn about the fighting in this area and standing on the north bank of the Waal River we discuss the river crossing by the 504th Para Infantry Regiment on the 20th September 1944.
Day 3:
Another busy day as we look at the Airborne operations, visiting firstly the drop zone of the 1st Para Brigade. From here we follow 2 Para’s route to the bridge at Arnhem, their attempt to capture the railway bridge and the actions around St Elizabeth Hospital. At the bridge we learn about the heroic stand of 2 Para and Lt Jack Grayburn VC. At Baskeyfield Tree, we look at the actions of L/Sgt John Daniel Baskeyfield on the 20th September 1944, which resulted in him being awarded the VC. Our penultimate stop today is in the landing zone of the Polish Parachute Brigade and the attempts to reinforce the perimeter by the them and the 43rd Wessex Division. Finally, we learn more about the withdrawal of the 1st Airborne Division.
Day 4:
Our final day and this morning we visit the CWGC Cemetery at Oosterbeek, there are three Victoria Cross holders buried here and we will pay our respects and take a moment to reflect before we head back to Schiphol Airport where tour concludes.
