Overview

To fully comprehend the full scale of the fighting in the Great War a visit to the French and American battlefields of the Verdun area is highly recommended.

“Every sign of humanity has been swept away. The woods and roads have vanished like chalk wiped from a blackboard; of the villages nothing remains but grey smears. During heavy bombardments and attacks I have seen shells fall like rain”.  This was the scene as witnessed by a pilot flying over the battlefield of Verdun, in the later stages of the fighting.

Itinerary

Below is a sample itinerary for a 3 day tour, all tours are personalised and once your tour is booked your expert guide will get in touch to start working with you to produce an itinerary for your bespoke tour.
Day 1:
This morning we depart from your chosen departure point, collecting our guide en-route we make our way to the port for your crossing and on arrival in Calais we travel south to Verdun. As we make our way, we drive part of the ‘Voie Sacree’ (Sacred Way), along which in many seven-day periods passed 190,000 French troops and 25,000 tons of supplies.
Day 2:
This morning we start at The Fort Vaux, where hopefully (weather dependant) we will be able to look across to Fort Douaumont which will help us understand how the forts were interlocked as a defensive system. Our next stop is the Memorial of Verdun, followed by a visit to Fort Douaumont. Travelling onto the Trench of Bayonets and Ossuary before our final visit of the day to Ouvrage de Thiaumont which was a smaller ‘linking fort’.
Day 3:
We travel to Le Mort Homme, which is the memorial with ‘They shall not pass’ recalled, then onto Cote 304 which was another site of bitter fighting. From here to Butte de Vauquois, which is the site where a huge German mine blew the hill almost in half. Our final visit today is to the Meuse Argonne American Cemetery, where over 14,000 Americans are buried.
